Policy<\/a><\/em>, 2015)<\/p>\n<p>10 to 20% of all causes of CVD deaths among the working age populations can be attributed to work. <sup><a href=\"#ref-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthywork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Stats-to-Know-Job-Strain-P-022-SC_Job_Strain_SUMMARY_October2010_V12.pdf\">Job Strain<\/a>,\u201d where workers have little control over their job, but who are under high pressure to perform, accounts for 17 per cent of depression in working women and 13 per cent in working men. <sup><a href=\"#ref-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>People putting in a lot of effort at work while receiving inadequate rewards, are twice as likely to suffer from CVD than other workers. <sup><a href=\"#ref-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Those reporting higher levels of unfairness at work were more likely to experience a heart attack. <sup><a href=\"#ref-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Employees reporting a high sense of justice in their workplaces had a 45 percent lower risk of dying from CVD. <sup><a href=\"#ref-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Shift workers (night shifts, rotating shifts) have an estimated 26% increased risk of CVD compared to day workers. <sup><a href=\"#ref-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Employees at downsizing firms have been found to get sick at a rate more than two times as high as workers who feel secure in their jobs. <sup><a href=\"#ref-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaroshi\u201d is a term in Japan that recognizes the problem of sudden death from long hours of over-demanding work. <sup><a href=\"#ref-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Job strain and long work hours were longitudinally associated with moderate\/severe suicidal ideation. <sup><a href=\"#ref-13\">[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Those with high levels of work stress (job strain, effort-reward imbalance) are twice as likely to think about committing suicide than those with no or limited amounts of work stress. <sup><a href=\"#ref-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Those working 11+ hours per day were two and a half times more likely to experience a major depressive episode compared to those working 7-8 hours per day. <sup><a href=\"#ref-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>3\u20134 hours of overtime work per day is associated with a 60% increased risk of incident coronary heart disease (CHD) compared with employees with no overtime work. <sup><a href=\"#ref-14\">[14]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>A study from Whitehall compared those working 40 hours per week at most, with those working more than 55 hours per week found lower scores in the vocabulary test at both baseline and follow-up for those working 55 hours a week or more. (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/national\/stress-levels-soar-america-30-30-years-article-1.1096918\">NY Daily News<\/a><\/em>, 2012) <sup><a href=\"#ref-16\">[16]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>40% of Americans who are employed full-time, now work 50 hours or more per week. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/175286\/hour-workweek-actually-longer-seven-hours.aspx\">Gallup Poll<\/a>, 2014) <sup><a href=\"#ref-18\">[18]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>In 2017, Americans worked on average 1,780 hours annually (includes part-time and full-time workers); that\u2019s almost 2 weeks longer than Japanese workers (Japan, 1,710 hours) and over 10 weeks longer than German workers (Germany, 1,356 hours). (<a href=\"http:\/\/stats.oecd.org\/Index.aspx?DataSetCode=ANHRS\">OECD Stats<\/a>) <sup><a href=\"#ref-19\">[19]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>Since 1980, American workers are putting in an average of nearly four more weeks of work each year\u2014from 43 weeks in 1980 to 46.8 weeks in 2015. (Pew Research Center and the Markle Foundation via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/10\/06\/heres-what-millions-of-americans-fear-most-about-their-jobs.html?view=story&amp;%24DEVICE%24=native-android-mobile\">CNBC<\/a>, 2016) <sup><a href=\"#ref-20\">[20]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>By 2020, over 40% of Americans will work in precarious jobs\u2014those with no job security or benefits (independent contractors) or as part of the \u201cgig\u201d economy. (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/downside-gig-economy-365422\">Newsweek<\/a><\/em>, 2015) <sup><a href=\"#ref-21\">[21]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>1 in 4 American workers have no paid vacation time and only 25% of Americans take their full paid vacation. (<a href=\"https:\/\/cepr.net\/images\/stories\/reports\/no-vacation-nation-2019-05.pdf\">Center for Economic Policy &amp; Research<\/a> via <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tanyamohn\/2013\/08\/13\/paid-time-off-forget-about-it-a-report-looks-at-how-the-u-s-compares-to-other-countries\/#5d7a724bd8aa\">Forbes<\/a><\/em>, 2013; <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/susanadams\/2014\/04\/04\/only-25-of-americans-take-their-paid-vacation\/#328625ca2c5c\">Forbes<\/a><\/em>, 2014) <a href=\"#ref-22\">[22]<\/a> <sup><a href=\"#ref-23\">[23]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li>More than half of American workers (52%) left vacation time unused in 2018. This added up to 705 million unused vacation days in 2017. Workers cited \u2018fear looking replaceable\u2019 (61%) as the greatest challenge, \u2018my workload is too heavy\u2019 (56%) as the second greatest challenge, followed by \u2018lack of coverage at work\u2019 (56%) and several others including \u2018the cost of travel\u2019 (53%). (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ustravel.org\/system\/files\/media_root\/document\/StateofAmericanVacation2018.pdf\">Project: Time Off\u2019s State of American Vacation 2018<\/a>) <sup><a href=\"#ref-24\">[24]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/et_pb_toggle][et_pb_toggle title=&#8221;What is work stress costing us?&#8221; admin_label=&#8221;Toggle &#8211; What is work stress costing us?&#8221; module_id=&#8221;toggle-what-is-work-stress-costing-us&#8221; module_class=&#8221;toggle-no-box toggle-22-font&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.25.0&#8243; title_level=&#8221;h4&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<div class=\"stats-info\">\n<p><strong>As Individuals<\/strong>As many as 10 different work stressors (including high work demands, having no power at work (low control), long work hours, shift work, job insecurity, work-family conflict, workplace injustice, etc.) have been related to poor mental (depression) and physical health (heart disease), and can shorten your life by up to 3 years! <sup><a href=\" ref-25\">[25]<\/a><\/sup>More than 120,000 deaths per year are associated with how U.S. companies manage workers. <sup><a href=\"#ref-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>As Organizations<\/strong>The evidence shows clearly that work-related stress and psychosocial issues lead to increased absenteeism and staff turnover rates, along with decreased productivity and performance. <sup><a href=\"#ref-26\">[26]<\/a><\/sup>The direct and indirect costs of work-related stress to companies (including increased healthcare premiums, and the added costs to employers from increased absenteeism\/sick leave, disability management, diminished productivity at work (presenteeism), and employee turnover) is estimated in the hundreds of billions.<span><sup><a href=\"#ref-27\">[27]<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Healthcare costs<\/strong> Approximately 5-8% of annual healthcare costs ($180 billion) are associated with how U.S. companies manage their workers. <sup><a href=\"#ref-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>Healthcare expenditures are nearly 50% greater for workers who report high levels of stress. <sup><a href=\"#ref-28\">[28]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sickness absenteeism<\/strong> When all forms of stress (including the impact of long hours, lack of commitment, personal problems and low workplace morale) are included, stress accounts for 40% of sickness absence, at an estimated average cost of \u00a3175 (U.S. $228) per employee\/year. <sup><a href=\"#ref-29\">[29]<\/a><\/sup> In the United Kingdom, in 2015\/16, over 11 million days are lost at work a year because of stress at work and 24 working days are lost per person. <sup><a href=\"#ref-30\">[30]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li><strong>Presenteeism<\/strong> Presenteeism accounts for 58.4% (32.4% is due to absenteeism) of the overall cost to British employers of stress, anxiety, and depression. Therefore, presenteeism costs a company with 10 employees an estimated \u00a36,050 per year. <sup><a href=\"#ref-32\">[32]<\/a> <\/sup>With higher levels of reported job stress (including understaffing because of absences\/vacancies, having \u2018\u2018too many\u2019\u2019 clients, time pressure, and \u201ctoo much work&#8221;), sickness presenteeism occurred more often than sickness absence among elder care workers<span><sup><a href=\"#ref-33\">[33]<\/a><\/sup><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Accidents and Injuries\/Workers Compensation<\/strong> Among employees who state that they \u2018always work under pressure\u2019, the accident rate is about five times higher than that of employees who are \u2018never\u2019 subject to pressurized work. <sup><a href=\"#ref-34\">[34]<\/a><\/sup> High psychological demands, emotional demands, and conflicts with supervisors and coworkers increased the risk of being injured in an occupational accident even taking into account demographics, fatigue, shift work, and type of work environment. <sup><a href=\"#ref-35\">[35]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li><strong>Disability Management<\/strong> In a cohort study of over 40,000 employees, the combination of job strain and ERI was associated with doubling the risk of disability due to depression. <sup><a href=\"#ref-36\">[36]<\/a><\/sup> A higher job strain score was associated with a 1.3-2.4 times higher risk of disability pension due to musculoskeletal disorders four and half years later. <sup><a href=\"#ref-37\">[37]<\/a><\/sup><\/li>\n<li><strong>Turnover<\/strong> National studies show that about a fifth of staff turnover can be related to stress at work.
