Em julho, como parte do <\/span>Campanha Trabalho Saud\u00e1vel<\/span><\/a>, n\u00f3s publicamos <\/span>Reabertura de escolas: sa\u00fade mental x sa\u00fade e seguran\u00e7a<\/span><\/a> sobre o debate intenso nos EUA sobre se as escolas (K-12) poderiam reabrir com seguran\u00e7a no outono para aulas presenciais, apesar da crescente pandemia de COVID-19. O debate parecia depender se as preocupa\u00e7\u00f5es de sa\u00fade e seguran\u00e7a relacionadas \u00e0 pandemia poderiam ser superadas pelos d\u00e9ficits educacionais e problemas de sa\u00fade mental para alunos e pais resultantes das paralisa\u00e7\u00f5es e do ensino \u00e0 dist\u00e2ncia que come\u00e7aram em mar\u00e7o de 2020. Claro que grande parte da press\u00e3o para reabrir as escolas vinha do governo da Casa Branca, esperando que a pandemia estivesse \u201cvirando a esquina\u201d e desesperado para reiniciar a economia americana, devolvendo os alunos \u00e0s escolas e os pais que trabalham no local de trabalho. Press\u00e3o pol\u00edtica do governo federal <\/span>amea\u00e7ando retirar o financiamento federal<\/span><\/a> das escolas e dos governos estaduais, for\u00e7ou muitos distritos escolares a abrir pessoalmente, apesar das preocupa\u00e7\u00f5es com a sa\u00fade e a seguran\u00e7a das crian\u00e7as, funcion\u00e1rios e professores. Embora a maioria dos maiores distritos escolares do pa\u00eds tenha tomado a decis\u00e3o de <\/span>come\u00e7ar apenas o aprendizado on-line<\/span><\/a> no outono.<\/span><\/p>\n

Parte do argumento para a reabertura das escolas era a no\u00e7\u00e3o errada sobre a falta de vulnerabilidade das crian\u00e7as ao v\u00edrus corona. Evid\u00eancias t\u00eam se acumulado de que as crian\u00e7as n\u00e3o s\u00e3o \u201cimunes\u201d e que as crian\u00e7as pr\u00f3ximas umas das outras (p. <\/span>exposi\u00e7\u00f5es de acampamento de ver\u00e3o<\/span><\/a>) resultam em surtos significativos. De fato, as taxas de infec\u00e7\u00e3o em crian\u00e7as de 0 a 17 anos dramaticamente <\/span>aumentou durante o ver\u00e3o<\/span><\/a>, principalmente entre <\/span>Crian\u00e7as negras e latinas<\/span><\/a> que eram mais propensos a serem hospitalizados com doen\u00e7as graves. Um recente <\/span>relat\u00f3rio do CDC<\/span><\/a> relataram 277.285 resultados de testes positivos entre crian\u00e7as de 1\u00ba de mar\u00e7o a 19 de setembro. Houve um pico de incid\u00eancia em julho, que se estabilizou em agosto, mas houve um aumento novamente em meados de setembro (quando as escolas reabriram). Houve milhares de casos desde a reabertura das escolas<\/a> mas sem um melhor rastreamento de contato, \u00e9 dif\u00edcil saber se os alunos ou funcion\u00e1rios da escola contra\u00edram o v\u00edrus nas escolas ou fora dela.<\/span><\/p>\n

A reabertura das escolas durante o COVID-19 tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 uma quest\u00e3o de sa\u00fade e seguran\u00e7a do trabalhador, que discutimos em um boletim recente publicado pelo TWH Center of Excellence, o Centro para a Promo\u00e7\u00e3o da Sa\u00fade \u2013 Nova Inglaterra<\/a> (CPH-NOVO). Milhares de professores e funcion\u00e1rios e seus sindicatos foram <\/span>preocupado<\/span><\/a> sobre ser for\u00e7ado a voltar para as salas de aula, alguns em <\/span>distritos que n\u00e3o seguiram<\/span><\/a> Diretrizes recomendadas do CDC sobre distanciamento f\u00edsico ou uso de m\u00e1scara. Muitas escolas, especialmente em regi\u00f5es com alto n\u00edvel de transmiss\u00e3o do v\u00edrus que tentaram abrir presencialmente, tiveram surtos e foram <\/span>for\u00e7ado a fechar novamente<\/span><\/a>. Infelizmente, professores e outros funcion\u00e1rios t\u00eam <\/span>faleceu<\/span><\/a>\u00a0desde o in\u00edcio da reabertura das escolas. Muitos professores e funcion\u00e1rios est\u00e3o em categorias de alto risco \u2013 mais velhos, com doen\u00e7as pr\u00e9-existentes ou cuidando de familiares com doen\u00e7as pr\u00e9-existentes, no entanto, alguns <\/span>professores mais jovens tamb\u00e9m morreram<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

O rastreamento de surtos escolares tem sido <\/span>irregular na melhor das hip\u00f3teses<\/span><\/a>. Tamb\u00e9m precisamos de um melhor rastreamento de doen\u00e7as e mortes por COVID-19 por setor ou ocupa\u00e7\u00e3o, porque sabemos que muitos empregos trazem um risco muito alto de exposi\u00e7\u00e3o. Para os professores nos estados onde as escolas foram reabertas, havia pouca escolha a n\u00e3o ser estar fisicamente presente no local de trabalho e o medo de exposi\u00e7\u00e3o ou transmiss\u00e3o do COVID-19 aos familiares acrescentou outra camada de estresse a um trabalho j\u00e1 estressante. Esse estresse adicional tamb\u00e9m pode aumentar o risco de problemas de sa\u00fade mental, como esgotamento e depress\u00e3o. Os professores, em particular, s\u00e3o vulner\u00e1veis ao estresse e esgotamento no trabalho, mas t\u00eam havido esfor\u00e7os cont\u00ednuos por parte dos professores e seus sindicatos para desenvolver <\/span>interven\u00e7\u00f5es eficazes<\/span><\/a> para reduzir este fardo.<\/span><\/p>\n

Compreensivelmente, os alunos precisam estar na escola para poder socializar e interagir uns com os outros, mas durante esta pandemia a sa\u00fade e a seguran\u00e7a de professores e alunos devem ter prioridade em qualquer tomada de decis\u00e3o sobre a reabertura das escolas, especialmente em \u00e1reas onde ainda h\u00e1 transmiss\u00e3o comunit\u00e1ria generalizada. Professores' <\/span>esfor\u00e7os de defesa<\/span><\/a> est\u00e3o ajudando a proteger n\u00e3o apenas sua pr\u00f3pria sa\u00fade e seguran\u00e7a, mas tamb\u00e9m a <\/span>sa\u00fade e seguran\u00e7a dos alunos e da comunidade<\/span><\/a> lutando por EPI adequado, tentando m\u00e9todos de ensino com distanciamento social e melhorando o aprendizado online<\/span>. \u00c9 importante que todos n\u00f3s <\/span>apoiar nossos professores e funcion\u00e1rios<\/span><\/a> enquanto eles continuam fazendo o trabalho pesado na educa\u00e7\u00e3o de nossos filhos durante este per\u00edodo sem precedentes, ao mesmo tempo em que lutam por ambientes de trabalho seguros.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
